Hello again! We're in the full swing of the campaign season, and we'd love to have your help with some of the upcoming events. Please do take a look at the upcoming items below and plan to get involved where you can see yourself fitting in. As usual, if there's anything you'd like to make sure gets in this newsletter next week, please email it to firstname.lastname@example.org.
First off, another reminder that the Schwartz Living Market, 1317 E Carson Street is now our effective Pittsburgh Jill 2016 Campaign Office! There are no paid staff here, so we rely on volunteers like you and me to make this happen. Volunteers can use the space to further the following aims:
The office will be open the following days and times this week:
We are looking for volunteers for all of these times, and it would be ideal to have at least 1-2 people signed up for each time slot. You can sign up to volunteer using this handy doodle poll. We especially need volunteers for making signs and art, and we would be glad to take donations of craft supplies to help enable this effort. Please come by and help!
We are planning a Jill Stein honk and wave/light brigade day for Sunday, October 23rd, weather permitting. We will meet at 2:30pm at the Schwartz Living Market and have a honk and wave on the 10th Street bridge from 3-5pm, followed by pizza at the Schwartz Living Market, and an overpass light brigade from 6-9pm, location TBD. Here's a video of another group in Bellingham, WA that did a similar event recently. It would be awesome to make a similar video of our event here in Pittsburgh, so let's make a bunch of cool signs this week and plan to get good use of them, both on the streets and online.
The outreach working group has been planning a lot of street leafleting events in different neighborhoods. We have leafleting groups targeting Market Square, Northside/CCAC, the E. Liberty busway, the Strip Distrcit, Downtown, and UPitt. To find a person to partner with and do street leafleting in an area near you, or to pitch suggestions for other outreach ideas, email Marty email@example.com. The next official Outreach planning meeting will be Wednesday, October 26th, at 7pm at the Schwartz Living Market, but please feel free to plan ad hoc outreach events with other volunteers and make use of the campaign literature we have available in the office.
Suzanne Bishop is planning a GPOAC-sponsored Happening to focus on art and music against war for Friday, October 28th. This event will be a great opportunity to focus creative and peaceful energy into building public understanding of what war is and how the Green Party values lead us to oppose it. It will consist of a series of artistic workshops and discussions held throughout the day at the Schwartz Market. Check the GPOAC facebook page and website for more event information, to be forthcoming. If anyone is willing to speak at this event, please contact Suzanne at firstname.lastname@example.org.
When I'm not volunteering to write newsletters for GPOAC, I run the Pittsburgh Peace Lights, and do light brigade events in support of Jill Stein and progressive politics here in Pittsburgh. Most of the news about what we are doing can be found on the Facebook page, the Twitter account, and other social media. We're having a light brigade tonight (Saturday 10/15) and we have another planned for next Sunday as described above. Additionally, we're planning an event in Franklin, PA on 10/21 in support of Mike Bagdes-Canning (see below); and will probably have one for Jill Stein in Gettysburg, PA the following night as well. Please feel free to join us at any of these events if you can!
Mike Bagdes-Canning, who is running for PA State Representative in Butler County, put together a detailed email update for those who have already signed up to volunteer for his campaign. There are a few upcoming events I want to emphasize:
We expect to hear details very soon from the Stein campaign about their Pittsburgh visit. This event has been in the works for about a year and we are very excited to make it happen. Please be prepared to do what you can to get the word out this event, and watch for another email update from us once we have a set date and time.
Thanks for reading all the way through. We hope you can contribute to the success of these efforts! See you soon.
Hello everyone! We had a lot going on the past few weeks with the fundraiser and other happenings, but the newsletter returns this week with a lot of great updates!
First off, I want to say "Thank you!" to everyone who helped out with the fundraiser at the Schwartz Living Market earlier this month. We managed to raise well over $500, of which close to $300 stayed with GPOAC. We could not have done this without all of the volunteer help and donations of baked goods and vegan dishes, so thank you for making this happen! You can see pictures and videos from the event at the Green Party of Allegheny County facebook page.
To enable our visibility and outreach efforts during the election season, the Executive Committee has negotiated an arrangement with the owner of Schwartz Market, and we are pleased to announce that 1317 E Carson Street will serve as our Pittsburgh Green Party headquarters starting October 1st. More details to come, but the October and November GPOAC monthly meetings will be held in this new space.
With that, another reminder that the October GPOAC meeting will be held at 7pm, October 6th at the new location, Schwartz Living Market, 1317 E Carson Street.
We had an outreach working group meeting this Monday, where we had a lot of great discussion about how to reach potential voters. Many of these events are listed below. Another outreach working group meeting to plan for more events will be held at 7pm next Thursday, September 29th at Schwartz Living Market. Marty Freundt also wanted to emphasize the importance of writing letters to the editor and opinion pieces for local papers in support of Jill Stein being in the debates; Jill Stein's candidacy; or Green politics in general. He has a great set of tips he's compiled for writing these letters, contact him at marrondun at comcast.net and he should be able to send them to you!
The light brigade had a honk and wave/leafleting event at the Squirrel Hill Night Market last weekend. This was a lot of fun and we were able to hand out lots of fliers to passerby. We are having an overpass light brigade event this Friday, September 23rd starting at 7pm on the Gerst Way pedestrian bridge over I-279 N, 1700 Howard Street. As usual, the Pittsburgh Peace Lights social media accounts are the best place to get updates on upcoming and past light brigade events. We are also planning another Jill Stein/Green Party light brigade event to catch traffic before/after the Steelers game Sunday, October 2rd, so please look for more information in the coming week.
We will be distributing fliers at farmers markets in South Side (Tuesday, September 27th), East Liberty (Monday, October 3rd), and North Side (Friday, October 14th). For more information or to get involved with the South Side event, contact Joe Boots at lightseekingdude at gmail.com; for the East Liberty event, contact Marty Freundt at marrondun at comcast.net; and for the North Side event, contact Sam at woundedefiant at gmail.com. We will discuss these and other events at the outreach working group meeting next Thursday, but do put some of these on your calendar and note that the South Side farmers market date is before the meeting.
As was the case for the last newsletter we sent out, there are a number of non-GPOAC events, both local and non-local where it would be great to have a contingent of GPOAC folk in attendance. The first is the 6th Annual Peaceful Gathering of Hands in Schenley Park this Saturday, September 24th. You can read more about it on the facebook event page. The next is the first presidential debate at Hofstra University, this coming Monday, September 26th, where Jill Stein is expected to address supporters and civil disobedience actions are planned in support of her being included in the debates. A few yinzers are carpooling to Long Island, NY for this event, contact Sam at woundedefiant at gmail.comfor more information. Also coming up next month is the GPPA state committee meeting October 22nd, in Gettysburg, PA. We can discuss a GPOAC delegation at the October meeting on the 6th, those interested in more information can contact Robert Piemme at robertpiemme at gmail.com.
GPOAC has Jill Stein buttons, bumper stickers, and yard signs available for suggested donation. For more information, contact Marci Henzi at profhenzi at aol.com. Additionally, I've added green LED lights to my yard sign to improve its visibility. You can do the same with this kit I'm selling online. A group in Washington state is also encouraging green porch lights in support of Jill Stein, though for either of these options please consider the environment before leaving lights on 24/7.
The Jill 2016 campaign has confirmed that they do intend to make a Jill Stein campaign stop in Pittsburgh late October/early November. We will be planning the schedule of speakers for a rally soon, so please contact Tim Jones at timjones285 at rocketmail.com to get involved in the Stein Visit working group!
Thanks for reading all the way through! We're looking forward to seeing you at these upcoming events! I'll send out another email next Friday with news from the outreach meeting, so if there's any news you'd like included please email me at I will make sure to add it.
